We all know there are many stories of the years of slavery in the U.S., and the Underground Railroad ... but did you ever hear about the quilt codes of that time?
It's been asserted that quilts were sewn with patterns that were meant to direct slaves to the Underground Railroad - and freedom - by using a series of symbols. And these quilts would be hung in plain view along the escape routes from one plantation to the next, and for all to see. But only the slaves would know the code symbols in them, and they were used to direct escaping slaves along their journey to safety.
Due to a lack of physical evidence and formal testimony, the story of quilt codes remains in controversy even to today. But perhaps that in itself is a testimony to the depth of secrecy, and therefore, effectiveness of this code system.
